Why Spring Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Spring is a growing metro community with a city population of 392,539 and a metro area population of 2.5+ million. With a 1.20% annual growth rate and a subtropical climate (hardiness zone 8b), the area supports steady residential and commercial building activity year-round. Homeowners and contractors in Spring benefit from an average of 228 sunny days per year, but also contend with an annual rainfall of 34.00 inches, which makes reliable grading and drainage a priority. That steady development and local weather mean demand for quality aggregates — including fill dirt — is high for projects that range from lot leveling and foundation backfill to yard regrading and erosion control. Fill dirt is the go-to material for raising grade, backfilling excavations, and creating stable subgrades before landscaping or paving. In Spring’s climate, well-graded fill dirt that compacts predictably helps manage stormwater runoff and reduces settling under heavy rain. Hello Gravel connects homeowners with local suppliers and professional haulers to deliver regionally sourced fill dirt on a schedule that fits the project. Order online, choose a delivery date, and rely on local materials matched to Spring’s soil and weather conditions for reliable results.Popular Projects in Spring This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Spring Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in Spring.
Delivery cost depends on the quantity, delivery distance, and supplier rates. Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing for your zip code during checkout; many Spring-area deliveries include free standard delivery for qualifying orders and the platform requires a 3-ton minimum. Next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. For an exact price, get a quote with your address and desired tonnage.
For driveways you want low-organic, well-graded, compactable fill dirt (often screened or engineered fill) used to raise grade and fill voids. Fill dirt alone is not a finished driveway surface; it should be compacted and capped with a structural base like crusher run or crushed stone. In Spring's clay soils, choose fill with good compaction characteristics and low shrink-swell potential.
Fill dirt can perform well if it is placed and compacted properly, but Spring's native clay cycles between wet and dry and can cause settlement if not managed. Proper compaction, moisture conditioning during placement, and using low-organic screened or engineered fill reduce risk. For graded or load-bearing projects, consider a geotechnical review to select the right material and compaction specs.
To raise 1,000 sq ft by 3 inches you need about 9.3 cubic yards of material (1000 ft2 x 0.25 ft = 250 ft3; 250 ft3 / 27 = 9.26 yd3). Loose fill dirt typically weighs about 1.2 to 1.4 tons per cubic yard, so plan on roughly 11 to 13 tons. Order an extra 5-10% to allow for compaction and settlement, which means ordering about 13 to 14 tons total.
Fill dirt is commonly used to raise subgrade level under pavers, but it is not a substitute for the compacted base and bedding sand required directly beneath pavers. Local Spring suppliers sell screened fill dirt and also offer base materials like crushed stone and bedding sand; Hello Gravel can connect you to both. For stable, long-lasting pavers, place compacted fill to rough grade, then install a compacted crushed stone base and a sand setting bed.
Fill dirt is a subgrade material, not a surface, so it does not have a replacement 'lifespan' in the same way a surface does. If properly compacted and drained, fill dirt can perform for decades as the subgrade; poor compaction or high organic content can cause noticeable settlement within months to a few years. Good drainage, compaction, and a proper base layer extend performance and reduce the need for future repairs.
Crusher run (a blend of crushed stone and fines) is generally the better choice for the structural base of a driveway because it compacts tightly and sheds water. Fill dirt is useful for raising grade or filling low spots but should not be the final base under traffic. For Spring's clay soils and heavy rains, use compacted fill to set grade and then a significant layer of crusher run or engineered base for durability.
Hello Gravel connects you to local suppliers and haulers who deliver materials; many local contractors and suppliers in the Spring area offer compaction and installation as a separate service. Tailgate spreading by the delivery driver may be available at their discretion but is not guaranteed. If you need full installation, ask Hello Gravel to connect you with local contractors or include a note in your order to request installation quotes.
Permitting depends on the scope of the work and location. Delivering material to a private lot usually does not require a delivery permit, but significant grading, changing drainage patterns, work in a floodplain, or large commercial projects may require permits from Harris County, Montgomery County, or local authorities and possibly approval from HOAs. Before ordering large quantities, check with local permitting offices, call 811 to locate utilities, and review any HOA rules to avoid complications.
Prices vary by supplier, quantity, and market conditions; in the greater Spring/Houston area screened fill dirt often falls in a range that reflects local supply and hauling costs. Hello Gravel provides live pricing for your zip code and shows all fees during checkout, with a 3-ton minimum order. For an accurate per-ton price, request a quote with your delivery address and desired tons.
Clear the drop zone of cars, debris, and low-hanging branches and make sure the truck can safely access the site; mark your preferred dump location and keep an alternate spot in mind. Call 811 to have underground utilities located before delivery, check driveway weight limits, and schedule delivery during firm ground conditions to avoid getting trucks stuck. Add Order Notes at checkout if you want the driver to attempt tailgate spreading, but expect that it may be declined for safety reasons.
As of today, we require 2 business days for delivery.
