Aggregate Base Course

Aggregate base course, or ABC, is a dense-graded crushed stone mix. It runs from about 1 1/2-inch rock all the way down to fine dust, and it's blended on purpose so the small stuff packs into the gaps between the bigger pieces. When you compact the layer with a roller or plate, it locks into a hard, load-carrying platform you can build a driveway, road, or parking lot on top of.

"Base course" just means the layer that sits under your finish surface, whether that's asphalt, concrete pavers, or a top coat of clean gravel. Every state DOT writes its own recipe for the gradation, so you'll see ABC sold under names like #610, road base, or crush-and-run. Recycled concrete crushed to the same size range works the same way, and it's usually the cheapest option per ton.

What people use it for

How to choose within aggregate base course

Under pavers or concrete

A crushed base — usually 3/4" minus — compacts to a solid, load-bearing pad. Uniform depth matters as much as the material.

Under a shed or hot tub

Compact 4 to 6 inches of base material. More for anything that will sit long-term.

Driveway base

Crushed limestone or road base underneath, topped with a decorative or wear layer.
