Buying guide
Pea gravel or river rock?
For paths & patios
3/8" pea gravel is the classic — small, rounded, comfortable to walk on. Edge it with steel or stone borders so it stays put.
For dry creek beds & drainage
Mix river rock sizes for a natural look — larger stones anchor the bed, smaller gravel fills between. Water moves through it all.
For beds & ground cover
River rock never breaks down or blows away like mulch. Lay fabric underneath to keep weeds out and stone from sinking into soil.
Pea gravel & river rock questions
What's the difference between pea gravel and river rock?
Size. Pea gravel is roughly 3/8" — small, smooth and easy to walk on. River rock runs larger (3/4" up to several inches) and reads as a decorative stone. Both are rounded, not crushed.
How many tons do I need?
One ton covers about 100 sq ft at 2 inches deep. The Help-me-choose tool above converts your path or patio dimensions to tons automatically.
Will pea gravel stay in place on a path?
With edging and a compacted base, yes. Keep the layer around 2 inches — deeper pea gravel shifts underfoot. For slopes, consider a stabilizing grid.
Is pea gravel safe for playgrounds and pets?
Rounded, washed pea gravel is a common playground surface and easy on paws — no sharp edges like crushed stone. Rinse-and-reuse beats replacing mulch every year.
