Dump truck unloading a pile of mulch.
What delivery actually looks like: a dump truck drops bulk mulch in one pile. Plan for about 12 feet of width and 14 feet of overhead clearance. The driver dumps in one spot you point out, then you spread from there.

No surprises on delivery day

Bulk material isn't like a parcel. Here's exactly what to expect so you're ready when the truck arrives.

Driver calls ahead

You get a heads-up so you can be there to point out the drop spot.

Dumped exactly where you direct

Driveway, side yard, or any spot the truck can safely reach.

How to choose your mulch

For looks that last

Dyed mulch (black or red) holds its color longest — great for front beds and high-visibility areas. Refresh once a year for a crisp finish.

For natural & low-maintenance

Shredded hardwood knits together, breaks down into the soil and feeds your beds season after season.

How deep & how much

Apply 2–3 inches — enough to block weeds and hold moisture without smothering roots. One yard covers ~100 sq ft at 3 inches.

Mulch questions

How many yards of mulch do I need?

One cubic yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3 inches deep. The Help-me-choose tool above converts your bed dimensions to cubic yards.

Is bulk mulch cheaper than bags?

Yes — by a wide margin. A cubic yard equals roughly 13 to 14 standard bags, usually at a much lower cost per yard once delivery is included.

Does dyed mulch harm plants?

Quality dyed mulch uses non-toxic, plant-safe colorant. Let fresh mulch settle a day before heavy rain so the color sets.

Where will the truck dump it?

On your driveway or a spot you point out, then you spread it with a rake or wheelbarrow. Plan a flat, reachable drop zone near your beds.
