Dump truck unloading a gravel pile.
What delivery actually looks like: a dump truck drops 10 to 18 tons in one pile about 5 to 10 feet across. Plan for about 12 feet of width and 14 feet of overhead clearance. The driver dumps in one spot you point out, then you spread from there.

No surprises on delivery day

Bulk material isn't like a parcel. Here's exactly what to expect so you're ready when the truck arrives.

Driver calls ahead

You get a heads-up so you can be there to point out the drop spot.

Dumped exactly where you direct

Driveway, side yard, or any spot the truck can safely reach.

Buying guide

Which crushed stone do I need?

For driveways

Start with a #57 or 3/4" stone over a compacted road-base or crushed-concrete bottom layer. The base packs hard; the top stone sheds water and stays put.

For drainage & French drains

Use #57 stone or drain rock — the open gaps let water move freely. Wrap in fabric to keep soil out and it won't clog.

For paver & flagstone bases

Lay #89 or 3/8" stone, then a thin fine-aggregate setting bed on top. The fines lock pavers in place without shifting.

Crushed stone questions

What's the difference between #57 and 3/4" stone?

They're close in size — #57 is a washed, roughly 3/4" stone with the fines removed, so it drains well. Plain 3/4" crushed stone may include some fines that help it pack tighter for a base.

How many tons of stone do I need?

One ton covers about 80 sq ft at 3 inches deep. Use the Help-me-choose tool above — it converts your driveway or project size to tons automatically.

Is crushed concrete as good as new stone?

For base and fill, yes — recycled crushed concrete compacts hard and costs less. For decorative or drainage uses where appearance matters, choose a washed stone.

Will the truck spread it or just dump it?

Standard delivery is a dump in one spot you direct. Spreading is a job for a skid steer or rake afterward — plan a flat, reachable drop zone.
