Base Materials 2 Stone

#2 stone is crushed rock with pieces roughly 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches across. The pieces are angular and washed clean of dust, so water drains straight through instead of pooling on top. You'll see it used where you need something big and chunky under a load, like the sub-base of a long driveway or a muddy spot that keeps swallowing smaller gravel.

The 2 is a size number from the ASTM D448 spec, the same chart that gives you #57 and #67. It tells you how big the pieces are and says nothing about the rock itself, which is usually limestone, granite, or trap rock depending on your local quarry. A yard weighs about 1.35 tons, and it's priced close to other clean base stone. If your finish layer needs to be smoother, plan to top the #2 with crusher run or #57 so smaller pieces can lock into the gaps.

How to choose within base materials 2 stone

Under pavers or concrete

A crushed base — usually 3/4" minus — compacts to a solid, load-bearing pad. Uniform depth matters as much as the material.

Under a shed or hot tub

Compact 4 to 6 inches of base material. More for anything that will sit long-term.

Driveway base

Crushed limestone or road base underneath, topped with a decorative or wear layer.
