Crushed stone is rock broken down at a quarry and screened into sizes. The pieces are angular, so they bite into each other under weight and hold shape instead of shifting. That's why it's the go-to base under driveways, patios, and sheds.
"Base" describes the job the rock does. It doesn't say what kind of rock you're getting. You'll see crushed stone base sold by ASTM D448 number like #57, #67, or #89, where each number is a size range from the sieve chart. A cubic yard weighs about 1.4 tons, so a 10-yard load runs around 14 tons on the truck.

How to choose within base materials crushed stone
Under pavers or concrete
A crushed base — usually 3/4" minus — compacts to a solid, load-bearing pad. Uniform depth matters as much as the material.
Under a shed or hot tub
Compact 4 to 6 inches of base material. More for anything that will sit long-term.
Driveway base
Crushed limestone or road base underneath, topped with a decorative or wear layer.
