Base Materials 11 Stone

#11 stone is crushed rock screened from about 1/2 inch down to 1/4 inch, with most of the dust washed out. The pieces are angular, so they lock together under weight instead of rolling around loose. That's why you'll see it under pavers, in pipe bedding, and as a top-dressing layer on gravel driveways.

The 11 is a size number from the Indiana DOT gradation chart, so you'll hear it most in the Midwest. It tells you how big the pieces are and says nothing about what kind of rock they came from. You can also buy it as "#11 dusty," which keeps the crusher fines in for tighter packing under a paver base.

How to choose within base materials 11 stone

Under pavers or concrete

A crushed base — usually 3/4" minus — compacts to a solid, load-bearing pad. Uniform depth matters as much as the material.

Under a shed or hot tub

Compact 4 to 6 inches of base material. More for anything that will sit long-term.

Driveway base

Crushed limestone or road base underneath, topped with a decorative or wear layer.
