Base Materials
We deliver every gradeBase Materials 4 Stone
#4 stone is crushed rock roughly 3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inches across, with the fines washed out. The pieces are angular and chunky, so they lock together under load and leave big voids for water to run through. That's why you'll see it show up as a base under heavy driveways and as the fill in French drains.
The 4 is a screen size from the ASTM D448 spec. It tells you how big the pieces are and says nothing about what kind of rock they came from. Most #4 you'll find is limestone or granite, depending on what's quarried near you. A ton doesn't cover as much ground as smaller stone because the pieces are bigger and stack looser, so it usually runs a bit more per square foot.

How to choose within base materials 4 stone
Under pavers or concrete
A crushed base — usually 3/4" minus — compacts to a solid, load-bearing pad. Uniform depth matters as much as the material.

Driveway base
Crushed limestone or road base underneath, topped with a decorative or wear layer.
