Paver Base

Paver base is crushed rock that runs from about 3/4 inch down to a fine dust, all mixed together in one load. The wide range of sizes lets the small bits fill in between the big ones when you tamp it, so the layer locks up tight and won't shift under your pavers. You spread it 4 to 6 inches deep, compact it flat, then set your sand and pavers on top.

Paver base describes the job, so the rock inside the bag or the load can be a few different things. Most of it is crushed limestone, crushed concrete, or crushed granite, depending on what the local quarry runs. You'll also see it sold as #610, road base, crusher run, or dense-grade, and they're all close cousins of the same recipe. Price runs a bit less than clean crushed stone because it's the leftover fines mixed back in with the bigger pieces.

How to choose within paver base

Under pavers or concrete

A crushed base — usually 3/4" minus — compacts to a solid, load-bearing pad. Uniform depth matters as much as the material.

Under a shed or hot tub

Compact 4 to 6 inches of base material. More for anything that will sit long-term.

Driveway base

Crushed limestone or road base underneath, topped with a decorative or wear layer.
