Base Materials Fill Material

Fill material is loose dirt, sand, or crushed rock you dump to raise a low spot or plug a hole in the ground. It's the cheap stuff that goes in first, before any topsoil or driveway rock. Most of it has been run through a screen to knock out roots, trash, and rocks bigger than about 4 inches, so it packs down tight under a roller instead of leaving voids you'll pay for later.

There's no single spec for fill. Every job site calls something a little different. Fill dirt is scraped subsoil, brown and clumpy, and it's the cheapest option by the yard. Fill sand and crushed concrete drain better and pack harder, so they cost a bit more and get used under a slab or behind a wall. Price tracks how far the truck has to drive more than what's in the load.

How to choose within base materials fill material

Under pavers or concrete

A crushed base — usually 3/4" minus — compacts to a solid, load-bearing pad. Uniform depth matters as much as the material.

Under a shed or hot tub

Compact 4 to 6 inches of base material. More for anything that will sit long-term.

Driveway base

Crushed limestone or road base underneath, topped with a decorative or wear layer.
