Why River Oaks Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
River Oaks, West Texas, Texas, is a small but active community of 7,499 people situated in a semi-arid part of the state. With a measured growth rate of 0.10% annually and a surrounding metro area population of 2.2+ million, there is steady demand for residential improvements and small-scale construction. The local climate—232 sunny days per year and 35.05 inches of annual rainfall—means yards and foundations must handle both intense sun and periodic heavy rain. Homeowners seek reliable aggregates to manage grading, prevent erosion, and create stable bases for sheds, patios, and driveways. Quality fill dirt reduces future settling and helps maintain proper drainage, which is especially important in hardiness zone 8a conditions and for properties across River Oaks and the larger metro area.Popular Projects in River Oaks This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - River Oaks Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in River Oaks.
Prices vary by supplier and exact material, but in the West Texas / River Oaks area fill dirt typically ranges from about $8 to $20 per ton delivered. Delivery fees depend on distance, access, and order size and commonly run from about $50 to $150 for local drops; very short hauls may be free. For an exact, up-front price for your address, check your zip code on our site or request a quote from Hello Gravel.
To raise 1,000 sq ft by 3 inches you need roughly 9.3 cubic yards, and for 4 inches about 12.3 cubic yards. Fill dirt in West Texas usually weighs about 1.2 to 1.6 tons per cubic yard, so expect about 11 to 18 tons total; order 10-15% extra to allow for compaction and settling. If you want a precise number for your site, use our material calculator or contact Hello Gravel with your measurements.
Fill dirt compacts but is generally not the best final base for driveways in River Oaks. West Texas soils can be clayey and expansive, so a stable driveway base usually uses crusher-run or crushed rock compacted in lifts; those materials shed water and lock together better under traffic. Use fill dirt for raising grade or backfill, then install a compacted crushed stone base before the driving surface.
Plain fill dirt is fine for raising low spots but it has limited drainage because it contains fines and compacted clay can hold water. For erosion control and improved drainage in River Oaks, mix or top with coarser materials (gravel, riprap) or use engineered fill and proper grading, swales, or French drains. Also consider vegetation and mulch to hold slopes; local contractors can recommend mixes suited to our hot, dry summers and clay soils.
When installed and compacted correctly as subgrade or backfill, fill dirt can perform for many years. Expect some initial settlement within the first months to two years; plan on topping up low spots after that if you did not overorder. If used as a surface material, it will need maintenance much sooner—use a more durable surface for driveways and high-traffic areas.
Fill dirt is the least expensive and best for filling and grading, but it lacks strength and drainage for driveways. Crusher-run (stone with fines) is often the best cost-efficient base because it compacts well and creates a stable surface for driving. Crushed rock provides excellent drainage and longevity but is pricier; a common approach is fill dirt for grade changes, then a 4-8 inch compacted layer of crusher-run or crushed rock for the driveway.
Some local suppliers do offer screened or graded fill dirt and may have different grades listed (clean fill, screened topsoil, blended fill). Compaction is usually a separate service; many suppliers or local contractors offer compaction equipment, but it is not guaranteed with standard delivery. When ordering through Hello Gravel, add notes requesting screening, compaction, or spreading and our team can check which local haulers or contractors can accommodate it.
Rules vary by neighborhood and HOA; some HOAs have restrictions on visible landscape materials, front-yard grading, or driveway changes. City permits can be required if your work alters drainage, street flow, or if you regrade more than a certain area. Before ordering, check with your HOA and River Oaks city planning or public works to confirm permit or setback requirements to avoid delays.
Hello Gravel's nationwide minimum order is 3 tons, and most deliveries to River Oaks are made by tri-axle dump trucks. Heavy or remote hauls, tight lanes, or limited access can add fees; standard delivery lead time is 2+ business days, and next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Add delivery notes about access, gate codes, or narrow drives so drivers can confirm safe drop locations.
A dump truck can deliver fill dirt to sloped sites, but steep or unstable slopes may prevent a driver from dumping in the ideal spot for safety reasons. Tailgate spreading is sometimes available at the driver's discretion but not guaranteed; full grading and compaction are usually provided by local contractors rather than the delivery driver. If you need spreading or grading, request it at checkout and we can flag suppliers who offer those add-on services or recommend local contractors.
As of today, we require 2 business days for delivery.
