Mulch Organics
We deliver every gradeMulch
Mulch is shredded wood or bark you spread on top of soil around plants, trees, and garden beds. It's usually a byproduct of tree work: logs and branches run through a chipper, then shredded down to strips a few inches long. The pieces knit together into a loose mat that shades the ground, holds moisture in, and slows weed growth.
You'll see mulch sold by color and by wood type. Brown or natural hardwood is the raw shredded wood with nothing added. Black and red are the same shredded wood dyed with a colorant that holds its shade for about a season before it fades. A yard of dry shredded hardwood weighs roughly 500 to 800 pounds, so a full pickup load is light enough that one truck can carry a big order in a single trip.
What people use it for
How to choose within mulch
How much depth
2 to 3 inches is the sweet spot. Deeper starves the roots; thinner lets weeds through.
Color hold
Dyed mulches keep their color for a season, sometimes two. Natural mulch fades to grey within a few months.
Fine vs. coarse
Fine mulch breaks down into soil faster. Coarse mulch lasts longer and stays put on a slope.
