Topsoil

Topsoil is the dark upper layer of soil where plants root. It's a mix of sand, silt, clay, decomposed leaves, and living microbes. The stuff we sell is screened, which means it's been run through a mesh to pull out rocks, roots, and clumps. You get a soft, crumbly dirt that spreads and rakes without fighting you.

Topsoil doesn't have a screen size stamped on it the way #57 stone does. Quality depends on where it got scraped from, so ask your driver about the source if you're growing food or laying sod. Screened costs a bit more than unscreened because someone had to run it through a machine first, but it saves you hours of picking rocks out by hand.

How to choose within topsoil

How much depth

2 to 3 inches is the sweet spot. Deeper starves the roots; thinner lets weeds through.

Color hold

Dyed mulches keep their color for a season, sometimes two. Natural mulch fades to grey within a few months.

Fine vs. coarse

Fine mulch breaks down into soil faster. Coarse mulch lasts longer and stays put on a slope.
