Garden Soil

Garden soil is topsoil that's been blended with compost and other organic amendments so plants have something rich to grow in. The base is screened dirt. The compost feeds the roots and helps the mix hold water without packing down hard when it dries.

You'll see garden soil sold under a few names: raised-bed mix, vegetable mix, or just plain garden soil. Recipes vary by yard, but a common blend runs around 60% topsoil, 30% compost, and 10% sand or perlite for drainage. A yard weighs roughly 2,000 to 2,400 pounds and covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, which is the depth most raised beds want.

How to choose within garden soil

How much depth

2 to 3 inches is the sweet spot. Deeper starves the roots; thinner lets weeds through.

Color hold

Dyed mulches keep their color for a season, sometimes two. Natural mulch fades to grey within a few months.

Fine vs. coarse

Fine mulch breaks down into soil faster. Coarse mulch lasts longer and stays put on a slope.
