Topsoil Blend

Topsoil blend is screened dirt mixed with sand and compost to hit a loam texture. The screen pulls out rocks, roots, and clumps bigger than about 3/8 inch, so what you get pours smooth and rakes flat. The blend holds water for roots but still drains, which straight clay or pure sand can't do on their own.

"Blend" means the pile started with local topsoil and got worked over before it left the yard. Suppliers add sand to loosen heavy dirt or compost to feed the plants, then screen the whole mix. Recipes vary yard to yard, so ask what's in it before you order a big load. Blended topsoil runs a little lighter than straight fill dirt, usually around 1.2 tons per cubic yard.

How to choose within topsoil blend

How much depth

2 to 3 inches is the sweet spot. Deeper starves the roots; thinner lets weeds through.

Color hold

Dyed mulches keep their color for a season, sometimes two. Natural mulch fades to grey within a few months.

Fine vs. coarse

Fine mulch breaks down into soil faster. Coarse mulch lasts longer and stays put on a slope.
