Rubber Mulch

Rubber mulch is shredded recycled tire rubber with the steel wire pulled out. The pieces are usually chunks or nuggets running from about 3/8 inch to 1-1/4 inch across. It doesn't rot the way wood mulch does, so it stays in place for years instead of breaking down each season.

The name covers two different products. Playground rubber mulch uses bigger nuggets tested to cushion falls under swings and slides, and it's often certified to ASTM F1292 for impact safety. Landscape rubber mulch is thinner shreds dyed black, brown, or red for beds around trees and shrubs. It costs more per yard than wood mulch up front, but you won't be topping it off every spring.

How to choose within rubber mulch

How much depth

2 to 3 inches is the sweet spot. Deeper starves the roots; thinner lets weeds through.

Color hold

Dyed mulches keep their color for a season, sometimes two. Natural mulch fades to grey within a few months.

Fine vs. coarse

Fine mulch breaks down into soil faster. Coarse mulch lasts longer and stays put on a slope.
