Drain Rock

Drain rock is clean, washed gravel with the dust and fines screened out. Water runs straight through it instead of pooling up. Pieces usually run 3/8 inch to about 1 1/2 inch, depending on the grade you pick. The gaps between the stones stay open because there's no sand or dust packed in there, which is what lets it move water so fast.

The name tells you the job, not the type of rock. Any clean, washed stone in the right size counts as drain rock, and you'll see it made from granite, limestone, or river gravel depending on what's local to your yard. 3/4 inch washed is the most common grade, and it's what most French drains, foundation trenches, and pipe bedding jobs call for. It runs a bit more per ton than unwashed gravel because that washing step takes extra work at the quarry.

How to choose within drain rock

Compaction over drainage

Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.

Drainage over compaction

The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.

Washed vs. unwashed

Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
