Crushed Stone
We deliver every grade4 Stone
#4 stone is crushed rock screened between about 1 1/2 inches and 3/4 inch. The pieces are chunky and angular, so they lock into each other under weight instead of rolling around. It's big enough that you can see straight through a pile, and water drops right through the gaps. That's why you'll see it in French drains, septic fields, and under pipes.
The 4 is a screen size from the ASTM D448 spec. It tells you the pieces run about 1 1/2 inches down to 3/4 inch, and that's all it tells you. The rock itself might be limestone, granite, or trap rock, depending on what's quarried near you. Because #4 is coarse and usually washed clean of dust, it costs a bit more per ton than smaller crushed stone like #57 or #67.

What people use it for
How to choose within 4 stone
Compaction over drainage
Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.
Drainage over compaction
The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.
Washed vs. unwashed
Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
