Crushed Stone 3 Stone

#3 stone is crushed rock in pieces roughly 1 to 2 inches across. The dust and small stuff have been screened out, so what's left is big, angular chunks with lots of open space between them. Water runs right through it. It won't pack down flat, and that's the point.

The 3 is a size number from the ASTM D448 spec, also used by AASHTO M43. It tells you the pieces fall in that 1 to 2 inch range and says nothing about what kind of rock they came from. Depending on what your local quarry pulls out, that could be limestone, granite, or trap rock. You'll usually pay a bit less per ton than screened decorative gravel because there's no washing or color sorting involved.

How to choose within crushed stone 3 stone

Compaction over drainage

Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.

Drainage over compaction

The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.

Washed vs. unwashed

Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
