Crushed Stone

5 Stone

#5 stone is crushed rock screened between about 1 inch and 1/2 inch, with the fines washed out. The pieces are angular, so they lock together under weight instead of rolling around. Water still drains through the layer because the dust is gone.

The 5 is a screen size from the ASTM D448 spec. It tells you how big the pieces are and says nothing about what kind of rock they came from, so your local quarry might sell it as limestone, granite, or trap rock. A cubic yard weighs around 1.35 tons, and it usually prices in the middle of the crushed stone lineup.

How to choose within 5 stone

Compaction over drainage

Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.

Drainage over compaction

The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.

Washed vs. unwashed

Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
