Crushed Stone

We deliver every grade

1 Stone

#1 stone is large crushed rock, roughly 2 to 4 inches across. The pieces are angular and heavy, so once you drop them in place they stay put. Water runs right through the gaps between the rocks, which is why you'll see #1 used at the bottom of French drains and along embankments that need to shed runoff.

The "1" is a screen size from the ASTM D448 spec. It tells you the pieces run from about 3 1/2 inches down to 1 1/2 inches, and it says nothing about what kind of rock they came from. That part depends on your local quarry, which might crush limestone, granite, or trap rock. One cubic yard weighs roughly 1.4 tons, so plan on a heavier haul than the same volume of smaller stone.

How to choose within 1 stone

Compaction over drainage

Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.

Drainage over compaction

The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.

Washed vs. unwashed

Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
