Gravel 1 Stone

#1 stone is chunky crushed rock, with pieces running about 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches across. That's roughly the size of a lemon up to a small potato. The pieces are angular from the crusher, and the dust and small chips get screened out, so water flows straight through the pile.

The "1" comes from the ASTM D448 size chart, the same chart that names smaller stones like #57 and #8. The number tells you how big the rock is, not what it's made of, so you'll see #1 stone quarried from limestone, granite, or river rock depending on where you live. It's too coarse for driveways or walkways, so most home projects don't call for it.

How to choose within gravel 1 stone

Foot traffic

Pea gravel and river rock feel good barefoot but shift underfoot; use a border so they stay where you put them.

Vehicle traffic

Round gravel rolls under tires. Pick angular crushed stone for a driveway; save rounded gravel for garden paths and beds.

Drainage

All of these drain well. Bigger pieces drain faster; smaller pieces pack tighter.
