Rip rap is large, angular rock you place on a slope to keep water from washing the ground out. The pieces run big, usually between 4 inches and 24 inches across, sometimes bigger. You'll see it lining creek banks, pond edges, culvert outlets, and the ditches next to bridges. The stone has to be blocky, not flat or spiky, so the pieces lock together when water pushes on them.
Rip rap is sold by class: R-3, R-4, R-5 and so on, or Class 1, Class 2, Class A. The number tells you the median stone weight and size. R-3 runs around 50 pounds and 8 inches across; R-6 runs around 500 pounds and 16 inches. Bigger classes cost more per ton because they need heavier equipment to load and place. A yard weighs about 1.4 to 1.5 tons once it's dumped, since the gaps between the stones eat up a lot of the space.

How to choose within rip rap
Foot traffic
Pea gravel and river rock feel good barefoot but shift underfoot; use a border so they stay where you put them.
Vehicle traffic
Round gravel rolls under tires. Pick angular crushed stone for a driveway; save rounded gravel for garden paths and beds.
Drainage
All of these drain well. Bigger pieces drain faster; smaller pieces pack tighter.
