Gravel Sand Blend

A gravel sand blend is a mix of small stones and sand in one pile. The gravel gives your project structure and load-bearing strength. The sand packs into the gaps between the rocks so everything locks up tight when you compact it. You'll see it come off the truck looking like a chunky, dirty version of coarse beach sand.

The blend ratio isn't standardized the way ASTM screen sizes are. Different pits sell different mixes, and the sand-to-gravel split depends on what the ground gave up when that pit was dug. Pit-run and bank-run gravel are close cousins to the same idea, dug straight out of the ground with no extra screening. Expect it to price cheaper per ton than clean, washed stone since you're skipping a processing step.

How to choose within gravel sand blend

Foot traffic

Pea gravel and river rock feel good barefoot but shift underfoot; use a border so they stay where you put them.

Vehicle traffic

Round gravel rolls under tires. Pick angular crushed stone for a driveway; save rounded gravel for garden paths and beds.

Drainage

All of these drain well. Bigger pieces drain faster; smaller pieces pack tighter.
