Gravel 8 Stone

#8 stone is crushed rock that's been screened to a small size, roughly 3/8 inch down to about 1/8 inch. The pieces are angular, so they lock together when you compact them instead of rolling loose like marbles. It's small enough to walk on comfortably but coarse enough to let water drain right through. You'll see it under pavers, packed into French drains, and mixed into ready-mix concrete.

The 8 is a screen size from ASTM D448, the spec that says how big the pieces should be. It's a size grade, not a rock type, so you'll find #8 cut from limestone, granite, or river gravel depending on what's quarried near you. A cubic yard weighs about 1.35 tons, so a full 10-yard truck runs close to 13 to 14 tons. Washed #8 costs a little more than the unwashed version because the crusher dust has been rinsed out, which is what you want under pavers or in a drain.

How to choose within gravel 8 stone

Foot traffic

Pea gravel and river rock feel good barefoot but shift underfoot; use a border so they stay where you put them.

Vehicle traffic

Round gravel rolls under tires. Pick angular crushed stone for a driveway; save rounded gravel for garden paths and beds.

Drainage

All of these drain well. Bigger pieces drain faster; smaller pieces pack tighter.
