Gravel 57 Stone

#57 stone is crushed rock screened between about 1 inch and 1/4 inch, with the fines washed out. The pieces are angular, so they lock together under weight instead of rolling around. That's why you'll see it used for driveways, French drains, and around foundations. It drains fast because water runs right through the gaps between stones.

The 57 is a screen size from the ASTM D448 spec. It tells you how big the pieces are and says nothing about what kind of rock they came from. You'll see it sold as #57 crushed stone, #57 limestone, or #57 river gravel. Same size, different rock. Price depends mostly on what's local to your yard and how far the driver has to haul it.

How to choose within gravel 57 stone

Foot traffic

Pea gravel and river rock feel good barefoot but shift underfoot; use a border so they stay where you put them.

Vehicle traffic

Round gravel rolls under tires. Pick angular crushed stone for a driveway; save rounded gravel for garden paths and beds.

Drainage

All of these drain well. Bigger pieces drain faster; smaller pieces pack tighter.
