Crushed Stone

We deliver every grade

Crushed Stone Rip Rap

Rip rap is chunks of hard, angular stone big enough to stay put when water pushes on it. Pieces run anywhere from 3 inches across to more than 2 feet, depending on the class you order. Most of it is granite, limestone, or sandstone blasted out of a quarry and broken down to size. The blocky shape does the work. Round stones would just roll away.

The name describes what the stone does, like armoring a bank or lining a culvert. It doesn't tell you the rock type or the exact size. Every DOT writes its own gradation, so Class I might be 2 to 6 inches in one state and 6 to 12 inches in the next. When you order, tell the driver where the stone is going so we can send the right class.

How to choose within crushed stone rip rap

Compaction over drainage

Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.

Drainage over compaction

The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.

Washed vs. unwashed

Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
