78 Stone

#78 stone is washed crushed rock sized between about 1/2 inch and a No. 8 sieve (roughly 3/8 inch). The pieces are angular, so they wedge together and hold under weight instead of rolling. The dust and fines get rinsed off at the quarry, which is why water runs through a pile of it fast.

The 78 is a screen size from the ASTM D448 and AASHTO M43 spec. It tells you how big the pieces are and says nothing about what kind of rock they came from. You'll see it sold as #78 granite, #78 limestone, or #78M (the M just means the washed version). It's a common concrete and asphalt mix stone, so the price usually tracks your local ready-mix market.

How to choose within 78 stone

Compaction over drainage

Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.

Drainage over compaction

The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.

Washed vs. unwashed

Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
