Crushed Stone

We deliver every grade

6 Stone

#6 stone is crushed rock screened between about 1 inch and 1/2 inch, with the dust washed out. The pieces are angular, so they lock together under weight instead of rolling around. Most of it comes from limestone, granite, or trap rock, depending on which quarry runs closest to you.

The 6 is a screen size from the ASTM D448 spec, and AASHTO M43 uses the same number. It tells you how big the pieces are and says nothing about what kind of rock they came from. You'll see it sold as plain #6 crushed stone, #6 limestone, or #6 granite, and the price tracks the parent rock more than the size.

How to choose within 6 stone

Compaction over drainage

Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.

Drainage over compaction

The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.

Washed vs. unwashed

Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
