Crushed Stone

We deliver every grade

56 Stone

#56 stone is crushed rock screened between about 1 inch and 3/8 inch. The pieces are angular, so they lock together under weight instead of rolling around. It drains water well and still packs tight enough to hold a load.

The 56 is a size number from the ASTM D448 spec. It's the range you get when a #5 screen and a #6 screen are combined, and it says nothing about the rock type, so you'll see it quarried as limestone, granite, or trap rock. Price runs close to other 1-inch base stones and moves with how far the load has to travel.

How to choose within 56 stone

Compaction over drainage

Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.

Drainage over compaction

The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.

Washed vs. unwashed

Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
