Crushed Stone

We deliver every grade

2a Stone

2A stone is crushed rock mixed with the dust and small chips from the same crusher. Pieces run from about 2 inches all the way down to fines, with nothing screened out. When you spread it and roll or tamp it, the fines wedge into the gaps between the bigger stones and the whole layer packs up hard.

The 2A number comes from PennDOT's Publication 408 spec, so you'll hear it most in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and nearby states. Other regions call the same idea crusher run, modified, or road base. It's usually one of the cheaper products at the quarry because nothing gets washed and nothing gets thrown away.

How to choose within 2a stone

Compaction over drainage

Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.

Drainage over compaction

The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.

Washed vs. unwashed

Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
