Crushed Stone

11 Stone

#11 stone is small, angular crushed rock, roughly 3/8 inch and smaller. The pieces are washed clean of the fine dust that comes off the crusher, so they don't clump up when you pour a load out. Under weight the sharp faces lock together instead of rolling, which is why paving crews mix #11 into asphalt and why it packs down well on a walking path.

The 11 comes from the Indiana Department of Transportation gradation chart, so you'll see it most in Indiana, Kentucky, and nearby states. The number tells you what sieve sizes the rock passes through and says nothing about the rock itself, though almost all of it is crushed limestone. It's close to what a #8 stone is in ASTM D448 gradings elsewhere in the country. You'll pay a bit more per ton than for a #57 driveway rock, because the small chip takes more crushing and screening to make.

How to choose within 11 stone

Compaction over drainage

Angular pieces lock together. Pick a smaller size when you need the surface to stay put under a driveway or path.

Drainage over compaction

The larger the piece, the more room for water to move through. #1 or #57 for a French drain; #8 or smaller reads as loose gravel.

Washed vs. unwashed

Washed has the dust rinsed out, so it drains faster and won't track into the house. Unwashed compacts harder — better under a paver base.
