Local Insights
Rochester Hills is a suburban hub with a population of 75,000 and steady annual growth of 1.20%, a combination that keeps demand for residential construction and landscape updates consistent year after year. That steady growth, together with a larger regional market of 2.5+ million people, means homeowners and small contractors often compete for schedule windows and reliable materials. Local climate — about 34.25 inches of annual rainfall and 228 sunny days per year in a hardiness zone of 8b — shapes practical material choices: properties need materials that handle wet springs, hold up under summer sun, and support plantings suited to this zone. For projects from driveways and drainage swales to patios and garden beds, quality bulk materials (gravel, sand, topsoil, mulch, and aggregate mixes) matter because correct gradation, drainage capacity, and regional sourcing reduce rework and improve long-term performance.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by considering the function (driveway, walkway, drainage), budget, and appearance you want. Match material properties to the use: look for durability and compaction for driving surfaces, and permeability for drainage areas. Regional sourcing means gravel, sand, dirt, stone may look and behave differently here, so use our material calculator or contact our team for recommendations.
Choose materials that resist breakdown and settle well through freeze-thaw cycles; stable, well-graded aggregates and properly compacted base layers help prevent movement. Adding a geotextile barrier and ensuring good drainage reduces freeze-thaw damage. Local variations mean your gravel, sand, dirt, stone may need slightly different installation techniques than in other regions.
Standard delivery is typically 2+ business days; next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. We require a minimum order of 3 tons and deliver by contracted dump-truck fleets (usually tri-axle). Tailgate spreading can be requested at checkout but is performed at the driver’s discretion and is not guaranteed.
