Local Insights
Oakland Township is home to 6,000 residents and sits within a larger regional market of 2.5+ million people — a setting that supports steady residential growth. With a growth rate of 1.20% annually, demand for home improvement, driveways, landscaping upgrades, and small-scale construction projects tends to be consistent rather than explosive, which means homeowners are investing in long-lasting solutions rather than quick fixes. In a climate that averages 228 sunny days and 34.25 inches of rainfall each year and falls in hardiness zone 8b, material choices must balance drainage, durability, and plant health. Quality bulk materials—gravel, sand, topsoil, mulch, and other aggregates—help manage runoff, create stable walking and driving surfaces, and establish planting beds that thrive in local conditions. Sourcing the right grades and quantities matters because local geology affects texture and performance, and homeowners increasingly expect reliable delivery and expert guidance for their projects.

While I cannot speak to the actual service, I did enter my phone number to get a quote. I realized it was probably too much for my small project. But I received a very helpful follow up text conversation, and after I explained it was probably more than I needed, they still took time to help me work through how much I would need, and offered me possible solutions, even knowing I wouldn't be using their product. Makes me wish they had fit my needs, if that's the level of service they provided even to a non customers

Choose materials based on function, drainage, and appearance. For load-bearing surfaces like driveways, pick materials that compact well and shed water; for beds and paths, focus on texture and weed control. Consider local soil and climate when choosing from gravel, sand, dirt, stone and ask our team if you need help matching a material to your project.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause frost heave and shifting if the base and drainage are inadequate. Choose well-draining materials and a stable base layer, compact in lifts, and allow for proper edge restraint to reduce movement. Regional sourcing means materials reflect local geology, so combine good site prep with the right aggregate for best performance.
Late spring through early fall is often easiest because the ground is unfrozen and crews can work without winter delays. Deliveries are available year-round, but wet or frozen conditions can slow installation and risk tracking or rutting. If timing is critical, choose next-day delivery when available and plan site prep around typical seasonal weather.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide on depth, then convert to cubic yards: (area x depth in feet) / 27. Different materials have different weights, so convert cubic yards to tons only when you know the material or use our online calculator for an accurate conversion. If you prefer, use Hello Gravel's material calculator or contact our team with your dimensions for help.
Most deliveries use dump trucks, typically tri-axle trucks, and Hello Gravel requires a minimum order (often 3 tons). Standard delivery is 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST with an extra fee. Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion; request it at checkout but note it is not guaranteed.
Next-day delivery is often available when orders are placed before the cutoff, but same-day service is limited and depends on local supplier and truck routing. Availability varies by zip code and local demand, so check your zip code on our site or contact our team to confirm options. We coordinate with local haulers to give the fastest feasible window for your area.
Small residential deliveries typically do not require permits, but major fills, regrading, or commercial projects may trigger township permits or regulations. Check Oakland Township zoning and building rules before a large delivery, especially if changing elevation, altering drainage, or impacting neighboring properties. Contact the township or your local inspector for project-specific requirements, and let our team know if you need assistance planning.
Clay-rich or poorly drained soils common in parts of Michigan hold water and can reduce material performance without proper drainage. You may need geotextile fabric, a compacted base, or additional drainage measures before placing surface materials. Addressing subgrade issues first will extend the life of any material you choose from gravel, sand, dirt, stone.
Labor costs vary with project size, local rates, and how much spreading or finishing is required. Hello Gravel coordinates material delivery; hauling is included in many deliveries but separate spreading labor is usually arranged with contractors and priced per hour or per project. Request quotes from local landscapers or ask our team for referrals to compare rates for hauling and spreading.
Natural materials vary by region, so texture and color may not exactly match photos. Contact our customer service as soon as possible to request changes; modifications are easier before the order is dispatched and we will do our best to accommodate you. If there is an issue on delivery, report it promptly so we can work toward a satisfactory resolution.
Some local facilities and landscape contractors accept excess aggregates or clean fill for recycling or disposal, but options vary by township and facility. Check with Oakland Township public works or local recycling centers for rules and fees, and ask our team for suggestions based on your location. Responsible disposal or reuse helps avoid unnecessary hauling and cost.
Clear vehicle access, remove obstacles, and mark the preferred drop location with stakes or cones so the driver can see it from the road. Leave room for turning and watch for low-hanging wires or soft spots that could impede a truck. If in doubt, take photos and share them with our team before delivery so we can advise on the best approach.
