Certified playground mulch is engineered wood fiber made for play areas and tested to playground surfacing standards such as ASTM F1292, which covers fall cushioning. Because loose fill compresses at least 25% over time, the CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook advises starting at 12 inches when a play area needs 9. The exact requirement still depends on your tallest equipment and the product’s test results. In the New Orleans-Metairie area, we sell certified playground mulch by the yard with delivery.

Playground mulch is there to cushion a fall, so the right choice is certified wood fiber laid deep enough to do that job, not whatever mulch looks tidy in the garden.

Getting that depth right takes planning, because loose surfacing settles and shifts with use. The sections here cover choosing certified mulch, setting the depth, preparing the base, sizing the order and arranging delivery.

About Hello Gravel

Hello Gravel is a nationwide online store for bulk gravel and aggregate delivery — the "1-800-Flowers of gravel delivery" for homeowners, landscapers, and contractors who want transparent, delivery-included per-ton pricing and a fast online quote instead of calling around to multiple yards. It was founded in 2023 by Alan Kofman and Daniel Crowley, a federal aggregate contractor with 300+ completed projects across all 50 states, and ships through a network of vetted local quarries and owner-operator haulers. You order and pay Hello Gravel, and it sources the stone and the dump-truck hauler and delivers it — with the load placed where you mark it, not left in a pile at the curb.

Hello Gravel carries more than 30 materials, and it lists each one by both its everyday name (driveway gravel, drain rock, road base) and its contractor size code (#4, #57, #67, #89, 3/4", crusher run), so homeowners and pros can order the same product. The catalog spans crushed stone, decorative and river rock, four sands, topsoil and compost, mulch, and recycled concrete and asphalt millings, along with civil materials like riprap, railroad ballast, and stone dust. Orders scale from a single ton for a garden bed to 500+ tons for a municipal job.

Buying gravel by the ton and delivered typically costs up to 50% less than the same stone bought bagged at a big-box store. Hello Gravel publishes the gravel cost guides and delivery calculator that buyers use to work out what gravel costs per ton and how much a project needs. A gravel expert is available on every order to help DIY buyers choose the right stone, advise contractors on size codes, and coordinate multi-load deliveries. Hello Gravel has served more than 10,000 customers, holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and is rated 4.9 out of 5 on Reviews.io.

What does “certified” mean for playground mulch?

Certified playground mulch is engineered wood fiber, often called EWF. The wood is ground into fibers and then screened to remove bark, leaves and debris, the process makes EWF a specific surfacing product different from the ordinary wood chips you might be used to.

The certification comes from testing against ASTM standards. ASTM F1292 covers impact attenuation, which is how well a surface absorbs a fall from a set height. ASTM F1951 covers access for people using wheelchairs, and ASTM F2075 sets the material requirements for EWF itself.

Useful Tip: The CPSC handbook’s table, which rates 9 inches of wood mulch to a 7-foot fall height and 9 inches of wood chips to 10 feet. EWF isn’t a row in that table, so rely on the product’s own test data for it. The handbook also advises against wood mulch made from CCA-treated lumber.

Some products also carry IPEMA certification, which is a program run by the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association. Either way, the product’s documents should state the standards it meets and the fall height it was tested to. You can always ask us for them before you order.

How does garden mulch differ from playground mulch?

Garden mulch has a different job from playground mulch. It is made to hold moisture and finish a planting bed, so it often contains bark and uneven pieces and isn’t tested for fall cushioning or wheelchair access.

We should also add that garden mulch can still have a place around the play area, despite being different from playground mulch. Our bulk mulch delivery includes shredded hardwood for beds and trees, so you can use it in the surrounding landscaping and keep certified wood fiber inside the play zone.

How does rubber mulch compare?

Rubber mulch is shredded recycled rubber, and the CPSC handbook lists it as a playground surface rated to a 10-foot fall height at 6 inches. We don’t sell it, so our certified wood fiber is the option we deliver.

How deep should playground mulch be?

The depth you work with depends on how far a child could fall, and how the surfacing performed in testing. So start with your tallest equipment’s fall height, then check the test data for the EWF you’re buying.

Whatever the test data shows, the CPSC handbook says never to use less than 9 inches of loose fill, except with shredded rubber.

Note that loose fill compresses at least 25% from use and weather, so a play area that needs 9 inches after settling should start at 12. Mark the target depth on a post before you spread the mulch. Check it regularly, especially under swings and at slide exits, and top up when the surface drops below the line.

We deliver by the yard so a top-up can be a single truck load.

What goes under playground mulch?

Start with what the CPSC handbook rules out. Loose fill should not go over hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt, and the handbook also calls for good drainage and a border that keeps the material in place.

Beyond those basics, the right base depends on your soil and how the site drains. Some use a stone drainage layer or geotextile fabric, but check the surfacing manufacturer’s installation guidance before you choose. Our guide to playground base materials compared covers the options, and we deliver both the base stone and the mulch.

How many yards of playground mulch do you need?

How many yards of playground mulch do you need?

Your order size starts with the use zone, which should extend at least 6 feet from the equipment in every direction.

Then multiply length by width by depth in feet, then divide by 27. At 12 inches, the depth is 1 foot, so a 20 by 25 foot area of 500 square feet works out to about 18.5 cubic yards. You’d order 19 yards, or four of our truck loads.

Round up slightly, because delivered bulk mulch can’t be returned. Our playground calculator does the math.

How does delivery work?

We sell certified playground mulch by the cubic yard and deliver it by dump truck in the New Orleans-Metairie area, with up to 5 yards per truck. At checkout, you pick a delivery date and tell us where to drop the load.

We show the full delivered price for your ZIP code, with the material and dump truck delivery all at once.

The same ordering process works if the play area is part of a bigger yard project. We’re a one-stop store for bulk landscape materials, delivering shredded mulch, screened topsoil, compost, fill dirt, sand and decorative stone by the ton or cubic yard alongside our gravel and crushed stone. The soil, mulch and stone for planting beds, grading the yard or laying a path can come from us in coordinated deliveries instead of from separate yards.

Where can you buy certified playground mulch?

With your yardage worked out, you can order our certified playground mulch by the yard if you’re in the New Orleans-Metairie area.

What are the options outside New Orleans?

Outside the New Orleans-Metairie area, we don’t currently deliver certified playground mulch, and our shredded hardwood mulch isn’t a substitute under play equipment because it isn’t certified.

Pea gravel is the playground surface we deliver more widely. However, whether or not it would suit your play area depends on the equipment, the installation and the safety guidance you follow. Our guides on pea gravel vs mulch for playgrounds and how much pea gravel a playground needs cover the comparison and the quantities.
