Agstone

Agstone is finely crushed limestone that farmers spread on fields to raise soil pH. It's the same rock as construction limestone, just ground way finer. Most of the pieces pass through a 60-mesh screen, so it feels like coarse powder with some grit mixed in. The active ingredient is calcium carbonate, which reacts with acid in the soil and sweetens it.

"Ag lime" is short for agricultural limestone, and "agstone" is the same thing under a different label. Quality gets rated by Effective Calcium Carbonate Equivalent, or ECCE, which combines how pure the rock is with how fine it's ground. A yard weighs around 2,700 pounds. Price runs low compared to washed decorative stone since it's a raw ground product with no size screening.

How to choose within agstone

Ask before you order

These aren't catalog items. Confirm size, color, and delivery window with the yard before you commit — every load runs differently.

Match the job to the stone

Flagstone, boulders, ballast, glass gravel — each has one right job. Get the job clear first, then the stone follows.

Lead time is longer

A specialty order usually ships slower than a #57 pallet. Plan the delivery date around the material, not the other way around.
