Local Insights
Watertown has a population of 24,000 and sits within a metropolitan region of 2.5+ million people. A steady growth rate of 1.20% annually points to reliable, ongoing demand for housing improvements, driveways, and landscape upgrades rather than boom-and-bust spikes; that steady pace means contractors and material suppliers are likely to be available consistently as projects roll out. With 228 sunny days per year and an annual rainfall of 34.25 inches, the climate supports frequent outdoor work but also requires attention to drainage and erosion control. Located in hardiness zone 8b, the area allows a wide range of plantings and reduces some extreme freeze concerns, yet seasonal wetness and freeze-thaw transitions still affect foundations and surfaces. For homeowners here, quality bulk materials—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, stone, and topsoil—matter because their composition and grading determine drainage, stability, planting success, and long-term performance across common local projects.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by matching the material to the function you need: load-bearing for driveways, well-draining for drainage projects, and fine texture for patios. Consider local climate and soil—materials sourced nearby will reflect regional geology and perform differently in West Wisconsin weather. Use our material calculator or contact our team for guidance on which option among gravel, sand, dirt, stone best fits your project and budget.
Estimate volume by measuring length, width, and depth of the area and converting cubic feet to tons using our calculator. Typical depths: 3-4 inches for a decorative patio layer, 4-6 inches for a driveway base, and deeper for structural bases or repair work. If you need help, send measurements to our team and we can provide a rough tonnage estimate.
No two natural materials are identical; regional sourcing means texture and color can vary across Watertown and West Wisconsin. Photos are representative; expect some variation in size, shape, and shade for gravel, sand, dirt, stone. If color or texture is critical, note preferences in Order Notes and contact our team before ordering.
Freeze/thaw cycles and snow can affect compaction, drainage, and settling, so choose materials that handle wet and cold conditions well. For projects started in late fall or early spring, plan for extra compaction and potential regrading after the first seasonal freeze. Proper drainage materials can reduce frost heave and runoff problems around homes near lakes or wetlands.
Standard delivery is typically 2+ business days from order, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. You can choose a preferred delivery date at checkout, and we will confirm timing with the local supplier and hauler. Delivery windows are estimates; we do not guarantee exact arrival times.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this is not guaranteed. Request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess whether it can be done safely on arrival. For precise leveling or larger jobs, consider hiring a contractor or arranging additional labor.
Our minimum order is 3 tons for bulk materials, which covers most small landscaping and repair jobs. If you need a smaller amount, check with our team for alternative product sizes or local pickup options. We can also advise on how many pallets or bags you would need if small-quantity options are available nearby.
Access limitations like narrow driveways, low-hanging trees, soft ground, or steep grades can affect delivery. Provide detailed access instructions and photos at checkout, and note any parking or unloading restrictions so the hauler can plan. In some cases the driver may refuse to enter a property for safety; alternate drop locations or offloading by hand should be arranged in advance.
Pricing is based on the material type, quantity, and regional supplier rates, plus a delivery fee that reflects distance, access difficulty, and timing. Many areas qualify for free delivery; final charges appear in checkout before you pay. For large commercial orders or recurring deliveries, contact our sales team for a custom quote.
Most simple deliveries do not require a permit, but certain work like changing driveways, altering shorelines, or major drainage projects may need local permits or shoreland approvals in Wisconsin. Check with Watertown municipal offices or your contractor before starting, especially for lakeshore properties or work that changes runoff. We can provide delivery documentation if you need it for permit applications.
Contact our team as soon as possible to request changes; modifications are easiest before the order is processed and dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate changes but cannot guarantee them once the supplier or truck is scheduled. See our order terms for details on cancellations and potential fees.
Contractors should plan quantities, delivery windows, and site access in advance and communicate any staging or offload needs in the order notes. Bulk ordering benefits from larger quantities to avoid split loads; check our lead times and next-day cutoff when scheduling jobs. We support contractor accounts and can assist with repeat deliveries, invoicing, and larger quotes.
We accept all major credit cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay through a secure online checkout system. Payment is taken at the time of order unless other billing arrangements are agreed for qualified accounts. If you need invoicing for a business or contractor account, contact our sales team to discuss options.
Inspect the load and note any visible issues at delivery, then contact customer service promptly so we can coordinate a resolution with the supplier and hauler. We will work to address quality or delivery problems based on our policies and the situation; see our online help for next steps and required documentation. Keep photos and any delivery notes to speed up the process.
