Local Insights
Kensington is a small but active community with a city population of 1,440 and access to a wider metro area population of 2.6+ million. A steady annual growth rate of 2.33% annually points to ongoing home improvement and infill projects rather than sudden booms; that steady growth typically drives consistent demand for basic construction and landscaping supplies—everything from base materials for driveways and patios to topsoil and mulch for expanding yards. With 228 sunny days per year and 33.00 inches of annual rainfall in a hardiness zone of 8b, homeowners need materials that balance good drainage, erosion control, and UV/weather resistance. That combination means practical choices across gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone, and a premium on regional sourcing so materials perform as expected in local soils and weather.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Coverage depends on the material's density and the depth you lay it. As a rough rule, 1 ton of common aggregates (gravel, sand, dirt, stone) typically covers about 60 to 100 square feet at 1 inch depth; deeper layers reduce coverage proportionally. Use our material calculator or contact our team with your planned depth to get a more accurate estimate for your Kensington project.
Prices vary by material type, local supply, and season, so costs in West Ohio can differ from one zip code to another. For a quick estimate, check our site for current pricing after entering your Kensington zip code or request a quote; we show transparent per-ton pricing and delivery fees when you shop. If you need help comparing options, our sales team can suggest materials that fit your budget and project.
Estimate cost by calculating square footage (length x width), choosing a target depth, and using a per-ton price for the material you want. For example, a 20 ft long by 10 ft wide driveway is 200 sq ft; at 3 inches depth you would need roughly half a ton per 10 sq ft depending on material, so multiply required tons by the per-ton price and add delivery. Use our online calculator or call us with your dimensions and preferred material for an exact quote.
Two inches of surface material may be sufficient for light pedestrian or occasional car use if it sits on a well-prepared base, but it is usually too thin for regular vehicle traffic. For driveways expect a compacted base layer plus 3 to 6 inches of surface aggregate depending on vehicle weight and drainage needs. If you have heavy trucks or poor soil, plan for thicker base and surface layers and consult our team for recommendations.
Dump truck capacity varies by truck type, but many tri-axle dump trucks used by our suppliers carry roughly 12 to 16 tons per load. Smaller or larger trucks are available depending on local haulers and your site access, and Hello Gravel lists the actual delivery size when you request a quote. Remember our minimum order is 3 tons, and we coordinate the right truck based on your order size and site constraints.
Cost depends on the truck's tonnage and the per-ton price of the material you choose; multiply the truck's tons by the current per-ton rate and add any delivery fees. For example, a 12-ton load at $40 per ton would be about $480 before delivery charges, but actual prices in West Ohio can vary. Get a firm online quote for your Kensington zip code to see exact pricing.
Lifespan depends on use, installation quality, drainage, and maintenance; a well-installed surface can last many years while requiring periodic replenishing. Light-use paths may need topping every 3 to 7 years, while well-built driveways can perform for 10 years or more with occasional maintenance like regrading and adding material. Proper base preparation and drainage in Kensington's climate are key to longer life.
Standard delivery typically takes 2 or more business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Delivery is by local contracted dump truck fleets; minimum orders are 3 tons and drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion. You can choose a preferred delivery date at checkout and add order notes about access, but confirm details early to avoid delays.
Start by identifying the project's purpose: drainage needs, load-bearing requirements, and appearance. Coarser, angular material tends to compact well for driveways and base layers, while finer, well-graded material is better for top dressing, and looser sand or dirt works for garden beds. Use our aggregate quiz or contact our experts with project details and site photos to get tailored recommendations for Kensington conditions.
Contact our customer service as soon as possible—changes are easier before your order is dispatched and we will do our best to accommodate requests. If there is a delivery issue or material concern, notify us promptly so we can work with the local supplier and hauler to resolve it; our team will guide you through next steps according to our policies. Keep order notes and photos handy to speed up the resolution process.
