Local Insights
Hicksville, with a city population of 5,500, sits within a growing regional market—its metro area population of 2.6+ million and an annual growth rate of 2.33% point to steady demand for residential building, yard upgrades, and infrastructure improvements. Those trends translate into more driveways, grading projects, garden renovations, and stormwater work that rely on reliable bulk materials. With 228 sunny days per year and 33.00 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, local projects must balance sun-exposed surfaces with effective drainage and erosion control. That combination increases the need for a range of aggregates and bulk supplies—loose soils and topsoil mixes for planting, coarser materials for drainage and base layers, and surface coverings for pathways and beds. For homeowners and contractors alike, clear quantity estimates, locally sourced materials, and dependable delivery help projects perform through seasonal cycles.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by thinking about use, drainage, and appearance: for heavy vehicle use choose a more compactable, angular material; for a clean patio surface choose a finer, well-graded aggregate. Consider local climate and freeze-thaw cycles in Hicksville when selecting materials, and remember regional sourcing means texture and color may vary. Use our material calculator and quiz to estimate quantities and compare options like gravel, sand, dirt, stone before ordering.
Hicksville experiences cold winters and spring freeze-thaw cycles, so schedule major installations for late spring through early fall when the ground is stable. Wet conditions make deliveries and spreading harder, and some materials compact or settle differently when frozen or soaking, so plan accordingly. If you need work in shoulder seasons, discuss options and timing with your supplier and hauler.
Quantities depend on project depth and area; a typical driveway base might need 4-6 inches of aggregate while a top dressing could be 2-3 inches. Use a calculator to enter length, width, and desired depth to get ton or cubic yard estimates, and remember Hello Gravel's minimum order is 3 tons. When in doubt, add 5-10% for compaction and spreading losses.
Standard delivery is typically 2+ business days, and next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Deliveries use dump trucks (often tri-axle) from local haulers, and availability can vary by zip code, so check service for 43526 and nearby areas. Choose your preferred delivery date at checkout, but keep in mind exact arrival times are not guaranteed.
Delivery fees depend on local supplier and distance from source; many areas offer free delivery thresholds while remote or very small towns may incur a small delivery fee. Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing during checkout and will indicate any delivery charges or minimums based on your zip code. If delivery looks higher than expected, contact our team to review options or delivery windows.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, and you can request this service at checkout, but there are no guarantees. The driver will assess safety and access upon arrival and decide whether spreading is feasible. For guaranteed spreading, consider hiring local landscaping contractors after delivery.
Costs vary by material type, quantity, and local supply, but you should budget for material plus possible delivery fees and labor for spreading or compaction. Hello Gravel provides upfront pricing during checkout so you can compare options like gravel, sand, dirt, stone and see the total before committing. For large projects, request a quote and check for bulk discounts or supplier recommendations.
DIY is viable for many homeowners for projects like small pathways, garden beds, or simple driveways if you have the tools and time; contractors are a better choice for large grading, drainage, or compacting tasks. Consider project complexity, access for dump trucks, and local code requirements when deciding, and use our sales team for guidance on material amounts if you plan to DIY. Contractors can often coordinate delivery directly and handle spreading and compaction.
No—because Hello Gravel sources regionally, texture and color will reflect local geology and may differ from stock photos. Expect natural variation in gravel, sand, dirt, stone and add color preferences in Order Notes at checkout if you have a specific look in mind. If the delivered material seems significantly different, contact customer service so we can work through next steps.
Local regulations can govern driveway connections, curb cuts, stormwater runoff, and building setbacks, so check with Hicksville village offices or Defiance County before starting major changes. Simple landscaping and garden projects usually do not require permits, but anything that changes drainage or alters public right-of-way often does. When in doubt, consult local authorities or a contractor to confirm permit needs.
Contact our team as soon as possible to request changes; we try to accommodate edits before the order is processed or dispatched but cannot guarantee changes at any time. Modifications are easier before the supplier is assigned or the truck is dispatched, and fees may apply for rescheduling or cancellations. For urgent issues on delivery day, speak directly with the driver if contact information is provided and then follow up with customer service.
Clear a wide path for the dump truck, mark the desired drop area, and remove obstacles like low-hanging branches, vehicles, or lawn furniture to ensure safe access. Consider ground conditions—wet or soft surfaces can limit truck access and may require a different drop location or a smaller delivery truck. If you need specific placement or spreading, note that in Order Notes but expect the driver to assess safety on arrival.
