Local Insights
With a city population of 182 and access to a larger metro area of 2.6+ million, Hangingrock is a small but well-connected community where steady growth (2.33% annually) is translating into continued demand for residential upgrades, infill construction, and outdoor living projects. That steady growth means homeowners and local contractors are increasingly focused on driveways, patios, grading, and landscape refreshes rather than only new subdivisions. The local climate—hardiness zone 8b with 228 sunny days per year and 33.00 inches of annual rainfall—creates a need for materials that balance sun exposure and seasonal moisture. In practice, that means choosing bulk materials (gravel, sand, topsoil, mulch, and engineered fills) that provide reliable drainage, resist weathering, and support plant health. Sourcing materials that reflect local geology and climate helps projects last longer and reduces rework.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Coverage varies by material density and desired depth, but as a rule of thumb one ton typically covers about 80-100 sq ft at 2 inches, 50-60 sq ft at 3 inches, and 40-50 sq ft at 4 inches. Sand, dirt, crushed stone and decorative stone all differ slightly, so use our online calculator or contact our team with your measurements for a precise estimate.
Measure the length and width of the area, choose the depth you want in inches, then use a volume calculator to convert to cubic yards and then to tons (allow for regional density). Add 5-10% extra for waste and compaction, and remember our minimum order is 3 tons. If you need help, use Hello Gravel’s material calculator or call our team with your zip code.
For regular vehicle traffic 2 inches is usually not enough. Driveways typically require a compacted base of 4-6 inches for stability, with heavier traffic needing deeper sections. Two inches can be fine for walkways, garden paths, or decorative top layers, depending on the material and underlying soil.
Coverage depends on the truck size and material density. A common tri-axle dump truck carries roughly 10-14 cubic yards (often equal to about 12-20 tons depending on material), which can cover roughly 1,600-2,300 sq ft at a 2-inch depth. Confirm the exact truck capacity with your supplier and tell us your project size so we can match the right truck.
One ton may fit in a full-size pickup depending on the truck’s payload rating and the material’s weight, but many pickups have payload limits under 2,000-3,000 lbs. Check your owner’s manual for your truck’s safe load capacity; for larger orders or uncertain payloads we recommend delivery by dump truck for safety and convenience.
Costs vary widely by material type, regional sourcing, and delivery fees, so we can’t give a universal price. Use our online quote tool or enter your Hangingrock zip code to see current per-ton pricing and delivery charges. Remember to factor in any optional services, like expedited delivery or requested spreading, which may add fees.
Standard delivery is typically 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. You can choose a preferred delivery date during checkout; we will confirm timing with the local hauler once the order is processed.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this is not guaranteed. If you want spreading, request it at checkout and the driver will assess safety and access on arrival. For larger or precise spreading needs, consider hiring a local landscaper or contractor.
Yes. Because Hello Gravel sources materials regionally, color, texture and particle size can vary with local geology. You can add color preferences in the Order Notes, and we’ll do our best to match them, but exact matches to photos are not guaranteed. Contact customer service if you have specific appearance concerns before placing your order.
These materials are versatile: they work for driveways and parking pads, patios and pathways, base for pavers, grading and drainage fixes, garden beds, and erosion control. Choose material based on needs like drainage, compaction, load-bearing, and aesthetics; if you’re unsure, our team can recommend the right group of materials for your specific project and budget.
Contact our customer team as soon as possible—changes are easiest before your order is dispatched. We’ll do our best to accommodate modifications, but ability to change depends on processing and hauler schedules. See our order policy for details or call 855-241-8884.
