Local Insights
Des Lacs has a city population of 420 and sits within a metro area population of 2.5+ million, a context that mixes small-town project needs with access to regional resources. With a growth rate of 0.40% annually, construction and landscaping demand is steady and incremental—homeowners are more likely to face ongoing maintenance, incremental upgrades, and occasional small build projects rather than sudden booms. The local climate—152 sunny days per year and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall, in hardiness zone 8b—means materials must balance drainage and moisture retention. That combination makes well-graded base materials, good topsoil blends, and organic mulches useful across many projects. Homeowners benefit from choosing aggregates and soils that support drainage, plant health, and load-bearing needs while reflecting the local geology.

While I cannot speak to the actual service, I did enter my phone number to get a quote. I realized it was probably too much for my small project. But I received a very helpful follow up text conversation, and after I explained it was probably more than I needed, they still took time to help me work through how much I would need, and offered me possible solutions, even knowing I wouldn't be using their product. Makes me wish they had fit my needs, if that's the level of service they provided even to a non customers

Just a little hiccup in the delivery date but everything worked out well and with great communication from Janel. Ordering went smoothly as well as working with the delivery team to deliver to the appropriate location for my yard.

Hello Gravel serves Des Lacs and nearby West North Dakota zip codes (check your zip at checkout). Minimum orders start at 3 tons, and deliveries are handled by local dump truck fleets; remote rural addresses may have additional delivery charges or longer lead times.
Standard delivery typically takes 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Exact timing depends on supplier and truck availability, so confirm your date at checkout.
Calculate the volume by multiplying length x width x depth to get cubic yards, then use our online material calculator or contact our team to convert cubic yards to tons based on the material. If you need help, provide project dimensions and intended material and we can provide a quick estimate.
A sturdy base layer is key: plan on about 4 to 8 inches of compacted base material for driveways and 2 to 4 inches for walkways and patios, with a thinner finish layer on top as needed. Proper compaction after each lift improves performance through freeze-thaw cycles common in North Dakota.
Materials that drain well and interlock—typically granular, angular aggregates—tend to resist heaving and rutting better in freeze-thaw conditions. Avoid fine, silty mixes in exposed areas and discuss local material options with our team since regional sourcing affects performance.
Local permits, HOA rules, and road weight or access restrictions can affect deliveries and installation; always check with Des Lacs city offices, your HOA, and county roads before ordering. Tell us about tight access, low-hanging lines, or private roads so we can coordinate the right truck and plan.
Some local suppliers and contracted haulers may offer tailgate spreading, light spreading at the driver's discretion, or add-on services, but these are not guaranteed and vary by provider. Request any additional services at checkout and confirm what can be provided when we connect you with the supplier.
Next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee, but same-day delivery is limited and depends on local truck availability. Small equipment rental (skid steers, compactors) is not typically included, though some local suppliers or contractors may be able to arrange rentals or referrals.
Plan deliveries and installations for late spring through early fall to avoid frozen ground, heavy snow, and short daylight hours in winter. If you must work in shoulder seasons, allow extra time for weather delays and discuss staging and storage with your supplier.
Use well-draining, heavier aggregates placed with proper slope and geotextile underlay to reduce erosion; terraces, riprap-sized stone, and vegetation are common combined approaches. Match the material to the job and local conditions—our team can suggest options that balance drainage, stability, and environmental rules.
We connect you with local suppliers who source materials that reflect Des Lacs geology and climate, and our online tools and sales team can help you pick a material based on drainage, load, appearance, and budget. Use our material calculator, take the aggregate quiz, or contact our team for recommendations and a delivery quote.
