Local Insights
Colfax homeowners live in a small but steadily growing community of 430 people, and the city's modest 0.40% annual growth points to gradual, reliable demand for repair, renovation, and small-scale construction projects. That steady growth favors practical upgrades—driveways, yards, foundation repairs, and garden beds—rather than large speculative builds, so homeowners need materials that perform reliably over time. Local climate and geography shape those needs: with 33.50 inches of annual rainfall, 152 sunny days per year, and a hardiness zone of 8b, drainage, erosion control, and plant establishment are frequent priorities. Quality bulk materials—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone—help control water, support load-bearing surfaces, and create resilient landscapes that match Colfax's seasonal patterns and soil behavior. Choosing the right combination of particle sizes, organic amendments, and surface materials reduces maintenance and improves longevity for common projects in the area.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Costs vary by material, distance, and season, but as a rough estimate delivered prices in the Colfax area often fall between $25 and $100 per ton (or about $30 to $120 per cubic yard) depending on the product and haul. Homeowners ordering smaller loads typically pay toward the higher end per unit, while contractors ordering large volumes usually see lower per-ton pricing. Always request a quote for your zip code and include delivery distance and any access issues to get an accurate price.
Choose materials that shed water and compact well, combined with a stable sub-base to resist frost heave; look for aggregate mixes designed for drainage and compaction rather than loose fines alone. Proper grading, drainage measures, and compaction matter more than any single product, so plan for a layered buildup and consider geotextile or thicker base in low areas. Local suppliers can recommend materials that reflect regional conditions in West North Dakota.
