Local Insights
Willmar is a city of 21,910 residents experiencing steady, modest expansion with an annual growth rate of 0.40%. That measured growth supports a consistent need for housing updates, yard renovations, and small-scale construction rather than a sudden building boom. Local climate—about 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in a hardiness zone of 8b—means homeowners balance dry spells with periods of rain, so materials that manage moisture, resist settling, and support plantings perform best. For projects from driveways to garden beds and foundation backfill, reliable bulk supplies like gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone help control drainage, establish grades, and create long-lasting surfaces. In a metro region serving roughly 2.5+ million people, regional supply chains and contractor activity influence availability and pricing, so quality local sourcing matters for timing, installation, and project durability.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices vary by material, source, and delivery distance, but expect a broad range rather than a fixed number. Local factors and truck delivery can add to the per-ton or per-cubic-yard cost, so get a quote for your zip code and project size. Use our material calculator to estimate quantities and ask for delivery fees so you can compare total job costs.
Choose materials that drain well and compact into a stable surface; a well-graded aggregate base topped with a frost-resistant wearing layer is a common approach. Proper depth, compaction, and drainage are often more important than the specific rock type in handling freeze-thaw. Regional sourcing means gravel, sand, dirt, stone may look different here than elsewhere, so plan for local variation.
Delivery availability usually follows local zip codes around Willmar, so enter your zip to confirm service and pricing. Most suppliers working with online marketplaces have a minimum order around 3 tons, and deliveries are made by dump truck (often tri-axle). Standard delivery lead time is 2+ business days, with a next-day option available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee.
Late spring after the frost is out through early fall is typically the easiest time for deliveries and earthwork, since ground access and compaction are more reliable. Avoid scheduling during the spring thaw when sites can be soft and deliveries may be restricted, and plan ahead for busy summer months when lead times can increase. Winter deliveries are possible but may come with access challenges, frozen material, or additional charges.
Measure length, width, and desired depth in feet and use: (length x width x depth) / 27 to get cubic yards. Common depths: 3-4 inches for garden beds/top-dressing, 4-6 inches for driveway top layers, and 6+ inches for a compacted base. To convert cubic yards to tons, multiply by about 1.2–1.6 depending on the material; contact our team for a material-specific conversion and an order recommendation.
Permitting depends on the scope and location of the work: small landscaping projects usually do not require permits, but large grading, changes to drainage, new driveways, or work in regulated areas may. Check with the City of Willmar planning and building department and Kandiyohi County for local rules, and verify any HOA covenants before ordering. If your project affects stormwater, wetlands, or public right-of-way, plan to get approvals first.
Different materials require different upkeep: some surfaces need periodic regrading and topping up, while others rely on proper initial compaction and drainage to last longer. In West Minnesota, freeze-thaw and winter snow removal increase wear, so expect seasonal maintenance like filling low spots and re-compacting. Choosing the right material for the intended use and preparing a proper base greatly reduces long-term maintenance.
Lead times often lengthen during the spring thaw and in peak summer when demand is high; book early to lock in delivery windows and preferred materials. Standard delivery is generally 2+ business days, but during busy seasons it can take longer, and next-day service may be limited. Confirm delivery dates at checkout and allow flexibility for weather-related delays.
It varies by project: many contractors prefer direct site delivery to save time and handle large volumes, while some smaller contractors or landscapers may pick up loads when convenient. For delivery, make sure the site has adequate access and a safe place for a dump truck to unload. Coordinate with your contractor and the delivery team to determine the best approach for staging and handling the material.
Common projects include driveways and driveway repairs, grading and drainage corrections, garden beds and raised beds, patios and walkways bases, and retaining wall backfill. Typical amounts vary widely: small garden beds may need 1–3 cubic yards, medium lawn regrades 5–20 cubic yards, and full driveways 20–60+ cubic yards depending on length and depth. Use the material calculator or contact the sales team with project dimensions for a tailored estimate.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, and you can request this service during checkout, but it is not guaranteed. Drivers will assess safety and access on arrival and may decline if conditions, equipment, or local rules prevent spreading. For reliable spreading, consider hiring a local contractor or confirming spreading services in advance.
