Local Insights
Wells, Minnesota, is a small but active community with a city population of 3,170 and connections to a larger regional market with a metro area population of 2.5+ million. A steady growth rate of 0.40% annually suggests ongoing demand for home improvements, infill projects, and upkeep of existing properties rather than a sudden building boom. Local climate — about 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of rainfall annually in hardiness zone 8b — means homeowners balance sun exposure with episodic wet periods, which drives interest in materials that manage water, stabilize soils, and support plantings. For Wells residents, reliable access to bulk supplies like soils, sands, mulches, and aggregates matters because these materials influence drainage, erosion control, and long-term landscape performance across a range of small- and medium-scale projects.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Consider the whole group of gravel, sand, dirt, stone and choose based on the role you need: drainage, load-bearing, top dressing, or leveling. Think about appearance, compaction, and drainage needs for the site rather than a single “best” product. If you are unsure, use our material quiz or contact our team with the project details for a recommendation.
Delivery cost depends on material type, distance from local suppliers, quantity ordered, and seasonal demand. Hello Gravel provides transparent pricing and a quote for your zip code; many areas qualify for free delivery and our minimum order is 3 tons. Request a quote or check the checkout screen to see exact delivery fees for your address.
Choose materials that shed water and lock together well so they resist movement during freeze-thaw cycles; good drainage and a stable base are more important than one specific product. Regional sourcing matters, so materials from local suppliers are selected for local climate conditions. Ask our team about options that balance freeze-thaw durability, maintenance needs, and appearance.
Spring through early fall is the most reliable window for earthwork and base installation because the ground is easier to compact and dry. Winter work is possible but may face delays from freezing, snow, or limited supplier availability. Plan ahead, check local weather, and note that standard delivery requires 2+ business days while next-day delivery is available for qualifying orders.
Yes, our network of local suppliers and contracted haulers commonly deliver to Wells and surrounding townships, but service availability should be checked by zip code. The typical minimum order is 3 tons and deliveries are made by dump truck, usually a tri-axle. Remote or restricted-access locations may incur additional fees or require staging at the street.
Measure the length, width, and desired depth of the area to get a cubic volume, then convert cubic feet to cubic yards (divide by 27) and use a general density to convert to tons if needed. Our online material calculator can do these conversions for you, or contact sales with your site measurements and we will help estimate quantities. Always add a small overage (typically 5-10%) to account for compaction and grading adjustments.
Local regulations, easements, and HOA rules can affect driveway placement, grading near roads, and stormwater management, so check with the City of Wells and Faribault County before starting work. Hello Gravel can help with delivery logistics but does not issue permits; contact your local building or public works office for requirements. If you need documentation for a permit, request order details from our team early.
Generally, stable, well-draining base materials that compact well provide the best long-term performance, while finer materials are useful for leveling but may wash out without good drainage. Recycled or local aggregates can be cost-effective but vary in consistency and appearance. Consider traffic load, drainage, and budget when choosing a base and ask our team to recommend options that fit your project goals.
Higher demand in spring and summer often leads to longer lead times and upward pressure on pricing, while slower seasons may offer greater availability and lower costs. We recommend ordering early for peak-season projects to secure your preferred delivery date and price. Hello Gravel displays estimated lead times during checkout and offers a next-day option for qualifying orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee.
Yes, recycled and locally sourced aggregate options are often available through our supplier network and can be more affordable and sustainable for many projects. Keep in mind that recycled and local mixes can vary in color, texture, and consistency by supplier and region. Ask for material notes when ordering and request photos or specs if appearance or consistency is important to your project.
Mark the preferred drop location and clear any obstacles on the intended route and dump area; leave order notes with any special instructions before delivery. Drivers generally dump at the street or driveway approach depending on access and safety, and tailgate spreading is available at the driver's discretion but is not guaranteed. Be onsite or reachable by phone during delivery so the driver can confirm placement and any on-site decisions.
