Local Insights
Alden is a small Minnesota community of 1,420 residents within a larger West Minnesota metro area of 2.5+ million. With a steady growth rate of 0.40% annually, construction and landscaping demand tends to be consistent rather than boom-driven, which often means homeowners focus on gradual upgrades—driveway repairs, drainage improvements, garden expansion, and small additions. Alden's climate, with about 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, creates alternating sun-and-wet conditions that influence material choice. That mix favors well-draining base materials, weather-resistant surfacing, and stable planting soils. For practical projects, reliable bulk supplies—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone—help ensure durable driveways, effective drainage systems, and resilient planting beds that perform under local weather and routine maintenance cycles.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose material based on function: drainage, load-bearing, or appearance. For base or load-bearing work select more angular, compacting materials; for drainage choose more porous materials; for top surfaces consider smoother, decorative material. Gravel, sand, dirt, stone are common options and regional sourcing means texture and color can vary, so use our material calculator or contact our team for help matching the right option to your project.
Freeze-thaw cycles, snow, and spring thaw can delay installation and make sites muddy or frozen. Seasonal road weight limits in spring and winter weather can affect delivery timing and truck access, so plan ahead and schedule deliveries outside severe weather when possible. We recommend ordering early in the season for large jobs and checking local conditions before your delivery date.
Standard delivery is 2+ business days from order, with a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Minimum orders start at 3 tons, and deliveries are made by contracted dump trucks (typically tri-axle). Always check your zip code for local availability and lead times during checkout.
Delivery fees depend on distance from supplier, order size, road access, and whether you need expedited service. In many areas free delivery is available for qualifying orders, while next-day or difficult-access deliveries may carry an extra fee. Exact pricing appears at checkout or you can get a quote from our team.
Small residential deliveries often do not require permits, but local rules vary and larger projects or work that affects the public right-of-way may need a permit. Examples include cutting curbs, using heavy equipment on public streets, or significant drive approach work. Check with Alden city or county offices for local requirements and contact our team if you need guidance.
Suppliers convert between cubic yards and tons using material density, which varies by type and moisture content. Estimating usually includes extra material for spreading and compaction (commonly 5-10% more). Use our online calculator, provide project dimensions and desired finished depth, and contact us for a reviewed estimate if you are unsure.
Narrow rural roads, soft shoulders, overhead wires, gates, and tight turn radii can limit truck access. Clear a staging area, remove parked cars, trim low branches, and share site photos or notes at checkout so the driver and supplier can plan. If access is restricted, we may need a smaller truck or offloading location nearby.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this is not guaranteed and depends on safety and site conditions. Request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess whether it can be done safely upon arrival. For precise spreading or grading, consider hiring a local contractor or arranging additional services separately.
Quantities vary by project size and desired finished depth, but rough ranges help with planning: a small walkway or garden path often needs 1-3 tons, a one-car driveway typically needs about 8-15 tons depending on length and depth, and larger driveways or significant grading projects can require 20+ tons. Use our material calculator for a site-specific estimate and add allowance for compaction and waste.
Because Hello Gravel sources regionally, color and texture can vary from photos or samples. Indicate preferences in Order Notes, provide reference photos, or request a sample if available, but avoid expecting an exact match. Our team can suggest materials that balance appearance, function, and local availability.
Contact our team as soon as possible; changes are easiest before the order is processed or dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate modifications, but edits may be limited once the load is scheduled with a supplier and hauler. See your order confirmation for contact options and timelines.
