Local Insights
Wallace is a small city with a population of 1,370. Its steady annual growth of 1.20% signals ongoing residential and infrastructure activity—more remodels, driveway updates, garden projects, and modest construction work are likely to continue, creating steady demand for bulk materials. The local temperate climate, with about 228 sunny days per year and roughly 34.25 inches of rainfall, supports a wide range of outdoor projects but also means materials must perform through wet springs and sunny summers. In this hardiness zone 8b environment, homeowners need supplies that provide good drainage, resist settling after seasonal wetting, and support durable plantings. Consistent access to quality bulk materials—dirt, sand, gravel, mulch, and topsoil—helps projects finish right and reduces long-term maintenance in Wallace's specific conditions. Wallace's mix of precipitation and sunshine affects how aggregates and soils behave: repeated wet-dry cycles can lead to settling, erosion, and compaction when materials or grading are mismatched to the site. That makes choosing appropriate gradation, depth, and drainage strategies important for bases, beds, and fill areas. Homeowners benefit from planning quantities carefully, scheduling delivery around site conditions, and selecting materials suited to local performance needs. Hello Gravel helps by connecting you with local suppliers who understand West Michigan conditions, providing calculators and guidance so you can pick the right materials and delivery timing for projects in Wallace.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices vary by material type, local supplier, quantity, and delivery distance, so there is no single rate. Request a quote on our site for a firm price for gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other aggregates in Wallace (zip 49893). Keep in mind seasonal demand and local availability in West Michigan can change pricing.
Five cubic yards equals about 135 cubic feet and will cover roughly 135 square feet at 1-inch depth, 67 square feet at 2-inch depth, or 34 square feet at 4-inch depth. For most landscaping and base projects, measure length x width x desired depth, convert to cubic yards, and add 5-10% for compaction and waste. Use our material calculator or contact our team for help with your Wallace project.
A single cubic yard might physically fit in many full-size pickups if the tailgate is down, but weight is the limiting factor and varies by material. Gravel, sand, and wet soil can weigh substantially more than loose topsoil and may exceed your truck's payload rating. Check your truck's payload capacity before loading and consider ordering delivery if you are near Hello Gravel's minimum order of 3 tons.
Tri-axle dump trucks commonly used by local haulers typically carry about 10 to 14 cubic yards, though capacities vary by truck and local contractor. Plan your placement area, ensure driveway access, and clear obstacles before delivery. If you need a smaller quantity, ask about split deliveries, alternative truck sizes, or mixing materials to stay within the minimum order requirements.
Buying in bulk usually lowers the per-unit cost compared with bagged materials, especially for larger projects, but total savings depend on delivery fees, minimum order sizes, and storage. For small jobs, bagged materials from retail stores can be more convenient despite higher per-unit costs. For a 20x20 slab at 4 inches thick you will need about 5 cubic yards of concrete; for the base, plan on roughly 2 to 4 cubic yards of compacted aggregate depending on desired base thickness. For the base choose an aggregate suitable for compaction and drainage; gravel, crushed stone, or a sand/stone mix are common choices. Contact our team for material recommendations tailored to local soil conditions and the West Michigan climate.
Standard delivery is 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Deliveries are handled by local contracted trucking companies in tri-axle dump trucks; choose your preferred delivery date during checkout. Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion—request it at checkout but note it is not guaranteed.
Consider the function (drainage, structural base, top dressing, or planting), required compaction, and local climate effects like freeze-thaw in West Michigan. Think about particle size, drainage needs, and whether you need material that compacts well or stays loose. If you are unsure, use our aggregate quiz or contact our sales team for recommendations based on your specific project.
Delivery cost depends on distance, truck type, and access constraints; Hello Gravel has a minimum order of 3 tons and uses local haulers, which can affect truck choice and fees. Tight driveways, overhead obstructions, or soft ground can require a different truck or staging area and may increase cost. Provide accurate access notes at checkout and contact our team early to discuss any special delivery needs.
