Local Insights
St. Joseph homeowners are part of a community with a city population of 7,000 and a metro area population of 2.5+ million. A steady 1.50% annual growth rate points to measured, ongoing construction and landscaping demand—more renovations, driveway and patio updates, and new outdoor living projects rather than a sudden building boom. St. Joseph's Hardiness Zone 8b climate, with about 152 sunny days per year and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall, means materials must balance drainage and heat tolerance. That makes reliable bulk supplies—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone—important for long-lasting results. Homeowners need materials that compact predictably for paths and driveways, drain well on slopes, and support plantings through wet and dry cycles, so picking locally sourced aggregates reduces surprises and rework.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices vary by material type, supplier, delivery distance, and seasonal demand, so we cannot quote one fixed price. For a tailored estimate, request a quote through our site or contact our team; the quote will include delivery and any local fees. Use the material calculator to estimate quantities before getting pricing.
Weight depends on the material and moisture content; a typical range is about 1.2 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard for common aggregates and soils. Denser stone may weigh more and loose, dry materials may weigh less. For precise planning, check the material page or ask our team for an estimated pounds-per-yard for the product you select.
Use this simple formula: (length ft x width ft x depth ft) / 27 = cubic yards. For example, a 10 ft by 10 ft garden bed at 4 inches (0.33 ft) deep needs about 1.2 cubic yards. If you’re unsure what depth to use for your project, contact our team for recommendations based on typical local uses.
Pickup truck capacities vary widely by bed size and payload rating; many full-size pickups can carry roughly 1 to 3 cubic yards but payload limits (weight) are the real constraint. Two cubic yards may exceed a small truck’s safe payload, especially with heavier materials. For deliveries through Hello Gravel, we use dump trucks; if you plan to self-haul, measure your truck bed volume and check payload before loading.
We can usually deliver to residential driveways, but access, overhead wires, and weight limits may restrict where a dump truck can go. Drivers will place material where it can be safely and legally dumped; if you need material placed in a tight spot ask for notes at checkout and the driver will assess on arrival. For tricky locations consider staging areas or using smaller local haulers arranged through our platform.
Tailgate spreading may be available at the driver’s discretion and can be requested at checkout, but it is not guaranteed. Drivers will evaluate if spreading can be done safely when they arrive. If you need guaranteed spreading or fine grading, plan for a separate landscaping service or contractor.
Our minimum order is 3 tons. Standard delivery is offered in 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Delivery timing depends on supplier availability and local trucking schedules, and you will receive a confirmation with an estimated delivery window.
Consider the function first: for drainage and base layers use angular, well-draining aggregates; for planting beds use screened topsoil or blended mixes; for finishing surfaces choose the texture and color that fits your look. Regional sourcing means local mixes perform differently, so use our material descriptions and quiz or contact our experts for suggestions tailored to St. Joseph’s local soils and climate.
Because we source regionally, color, texture, and particle size can vary from photos and between suppliers. Photos and descriptions are representative, and you can add color or texture preferences in Order Notes. If appearance is critical, contact our team before ordering to discuss local options and samples.
Freeze-thaw cycles and wet weather can change how easily materials spread and compact and may affect delivery access to lawns and driveways. Winters can slow or limit deliveries and increase demand, so plan ahead and schedule deliveries for milder, drier days when possible. We’ll notify you if supplier or road conditions affect your scheduled delivery.
Contact our team as soon as possible—changes are easiest before your order is processed or dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate modifications, but changes cannot always be made once the supplier or truck is scheduled. Check your order confirmation for contact details and timing guidance.
