Local Insights
Eau Claire has a population of 3,170 and sits within a rapidly connected regional market linked to a metro area of 2.5+ million. A steady 1.20% annual growth rate means gradual, ongoing demand for home improvement and new construction — not sudden booms, but consistent project activity from homeowners and local contractors. With 228 sunny days and 34.25 inches of rainfall each year in a hardiness zone of 8b, local projects balance outdoor living priorities with moisture management. That combination drives demand for a range of bulk materials: topsoil and planting mixes for gardens that benefit from a long growing season, mulches and dirt for beds and grading, and a variety of aggregates for drainage, driveways, and foundation work. Homeowners in Eau Claire need materials that perform across wet springs and sunny summers, and that reflect local geology and neighborhood preferences.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Hello Gravel connects you with local suppliers that offer common aggregates like gravel, sand, dirt, and stone. Choose based on function: drainage and base layers need crushed stone or coarse gravel; top dressing or planting beds usually need screened topsoil or sand; decorative areas can use specific stone sizes or colors. If you are unsure, use our aggregate quiz or contact our team for guidance on your project and local material options.
Measure the length and width of the area and decide the desired depth in inches. Convert to cubic yards (area x depth in feet divided by 27), then convert to tons using a typical local density or use Hello Gravel's material calculator for the specific product. If you want a quick rule of thumb, one ton of many common aggregates typically covers about 250 sq ft at 1u0022 depth, about 125 sq ft at 2u0022, and about 83 sq ft at 3u0022—but densities vary by material and region.
For most projects larger than a few square yards, bulk delivery is more cost effective because you pay less per cubic yard and save time hauling multiple bags. For very small projects, a few bags can be convenient despite higher unit cost; factor in Hello Gravel's minimum order of 3 tons and delivery fees when deciding. If you are near the minimum and need a little material, contact our team for options or a smaller supplier recommendation.
Standard delivery is booked for 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Materials are delivered by contracted dump truck fleets (typically tri-axle trucks); you choose your delivery date at checkout and receive confirmation once a hauler is assigned. Be sure the drop location has adequate access and overhead clearance; drivers will assess safety before unloading.
Hello Gravel's platform requires a minimum order of 3 tons; delivery fees vary by distance, supplier, and local demand. Many areas offer free delivery, while others may include a fuel or distance surcharge—check availability and pricing by entering your zip code on our site or requesting a quote. If a delivery fee applies, it will be shown up front before checkout.
Drivers may be able to perform limited tailgate spreading at their discretion and only if it can be done safely at the delivery site; this service should be requested at checkout and is not guaranteed. Compaction or mechanical spreading is usually not provided by delivery drivers, so plan to hire a local contractor or rent equipment if you need compaction or professional finish grading. Mention any site restrictions in Order Notes so the driver can plan accordingly.
Estimate the volume you need (square feet x depth) and convert to tons using our material calculator, then request a quote that includes material cost and delivery. Add potential extras such as next-day delivery, spreading, compaction, and contractor labor to get a realistic total. For common projects, request a free quote from Hello Gravel so we can match you with local suppliers and give an up-front price.
Options typically include hiring a local dump truck or hauler, renting a roll-off dumpster, or taking material to a permitted landfill or transfer station—costs depend on volume and material type. Hello Gravel focuses on supplying materials and works with local haulers and suppliers, so contact us for local referrals if you need removal services. Reusing excess material onsite or donating usable topsoil can reduce hauling costs.
In West Michigan, winter and freeze/thaw conditions can limit availability and make sites harder to access; spring and summer are peak seasons when demand and lead times increase. Order early in busy months and expect slower turnaround when weather restricts hauling or unloading. If you have a time-sensitive project, consider next-day delivery where available and confirm site access ahead of the scheduled delivery date.
Materials reflect local geology, so texture, color, and particle shape can vary across suppliers and even between loads. Hello Gravel sources regionally, and we note that natural variation is normal; you can add color or size preferences in Order Notes, but exact matches cannot be guaranteed. If appearance is critical, ask for a local sample or talk to our team before ordering.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible—changes are easier before an order is processed or dispatched and we will do our best to accommodate requests. If the hauler has already been assigned or the truck is en route, changes may be limited; refer to our order terms and refund policy for details. For delivery day issues, take photos and contact customer service promptly so we can work to resolve the problem.
We accept major credit cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay through our secure checkout. At delivery, ensure the drop location is accessible, clear of obstacles, and that the driver has safe overhead clearance; drivers generally will not handle cash transactions. Provide any access instructions in Order Notes and be available by phone if the driver needs to confirm the delivery location.
