Local Insights
Pullman homeowners are working in a small but steadily growing community (City Population: 2,490) that benefits from being part of a larger regional market (Metro Area Population: 2.5+ million). A steady annual growth rate of 1.20% suggests ongoing demand for residential updates, yard improvements, and infill construction rather than a sudden building boom; that steady pace favors projects that improve property durability and curb appeal over time. Pullman’s temperate setting (Sunny Days: 228/year, Annual Rainfall: 34.25 inches, Hardiness Zone: 8b) means materials must perform through wet springs and warm, sunny summers—so homeowners need bulk supplies that manage moisture, support plants, and create stable surfaces. For landscaping, drainage, and site prep, good-quality aggregates, soil blends, and amendments reduce maintenance and extend the life of driveways, paths, and planting areas in this local context.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices vary by material, quantity, delivery distance, and site access. Instead of a fixed number, expect cost drivers such as type of material (gravel, sand, dirt, stone), the minimum order (3 tons), and any special handling or disposal fees. Get an accurate price by entering your zip code (49450) on our site or requesting a quote from our team.
Common options include gravel, sand, dirt, stone, topsoil, mulch, and recycled aggregates. Choose based on the project's purpose (drainage, load-bearing, planting, or appearance), how it will be installed, and local climate and soil conditions. If you are unsure, use our material quiz or contact our team for guidance.
Bulk delivery is usually cheaper per cubic yard or ton than bagged material because it reduces packaging and handling. For very small jobs, bagged materials may be more convenient despite the higher per-unit cost. Compare total cost including delivery, labor, and convenience before deciding.
The cheapest options are often to reuse the material on your property or offer it to neighbors or community listings. If reuse is not possible, you can arrange a haul-away with local contractors, rent a dumpster, or ask our team about removal options—fees and availability vary by location and season. Be sure to check local disposal regulations in the Pullman area first.
Schedule delivery as close to the installation date as possible to avoid contamination, erosion, or compaction—same-day or within a few days is ideal. Standard deliveries require 2+ business days; next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Prepare the site, mark access points, and clear obstructions to help the truck unload safely.
Use this quick formula: cubic yards = (area in square feet * depth in inches) / 324. Convert cubic yards to tons using a typical range of about 1.2 to 1.6 tons per cubic yard for many aggregates, but densities vary by material and moisture. For the easiest option, use our online material calculator or contact our team with your dimensions for a tailored estimate.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but spreading is not guaranteed and depends on safety, access, and local supplier policies. Request spreading when you place your order and the driver will assess feasibility upon arrival. If precise spreading or grading is required, plan for a professional landscaper or contractor to finish the job.
Think about load-bearing needs, drainage, maintenance, appearance, and local climate. Materials like gravel, sand, dirt, stone (and complementary products) perform differently for driveways versus planting beds, so pick based on traffic, slope, and desired look. If in doubt, provide project details to our team and we can recommend suitable options and quantities.
A useful 'rule of three' is to address suitability, quantity, and logistics: pick a material suited to the function and climate, calculate the right amount, and confirm delivery and site access. Covering these three areas up front reduces delays and unexpected costs. Our sales team can help walk you through each step.
Not necessarily. Because Hello Gravel sources materials locally, texture and color can vary based on regional geology and seasonal differences. You can add color or appearance notes at checkout and reach out to customer service if you have specific concerns before ordering.
